Ways God speaks to us

—

·

If you’ve seen my previous blog post, you know I foolishly tried to use dice to determine God’s will because I saw the practice of casting lots in the bible.

Now, I want to expound on that and show you some ways that God has chosen to speak to us in this age.

1. The Bible

The Bible should be the main source of communication you have with God.

It is God’s gift to us, and in it are golden nuggets of wisdom everywhere that speak to every situation of life.

And you might be thinking, “but this doesn’t tell me what house to buy or who to marry.”

I beg to dffer.

Yes, it’s true that the bible won’t tell every individual believer what to do with his/her life.

But it only doesn’t do so directly.

When you immerse yourself in scripture faithfully, your mind is renewed.

Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

When your mind is renewed, you will be able to extrapolate the wisdom of the situations in the bible to your every situation, and know what decision to make that is aligned with His will, which will then bring you great success.

Life should not be lived like how people lived in this period of time in the bible:

Judges 21:25 “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.”

Often, I hear people saying, “follow your heart”, or “do whatever you want to do”.

That’s not biblical.

The right decisions are not made according to the desires of our heart, for we know:

Genesis 6:5 “The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.”

The right decisions are made by God. He is the supreme Creator, who decides what is right and what is wrong.

And He revealed the way of righteousness in the bible, then gave it to us to follow.

So, the Bible must be your first source of communication with God.

2. Your circumstances

God also speaks to us through our circumstances.

One day, I was deep in another depressive episode. I cried out to God all night, telling Him that I didn’t understand what He saw in me, and why He saved me. I felt like He made a mistake when He chose me, and I asked Him to kill me.

Just then, a message pinged on my phone from a friend.

I opened it and he asked me if I was a burden to him for always asking me for help.

I told him what happened just earlier, and that God was at work when he prompted this friend of mine to contact me because I often saw serving this friend as something I was able to serve God with even with my few abilities. It was a great encouragement to me.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

God is behind every thing that happens.

His Holy Spirit is active in the heart of every believer.

And He can push each one to reach out, and you might find out that it answers directly to a need you were having. There is no other way to explain it other than God intervened.

Similarly, God speaks to us in the “coincidences” of life.

And one day, He will have the final say when you reach the end of your life, and you look all around, and all you see are blessings Christ paid for.

3. Godly counsel

Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

In the past, my teacher gave the class an analogy.

She told us to think of one wooden stick, and how easy it was to break it.

Then she told us to think of two wooden sticks together. It was harder this time to break it, but still breakable.

Eventually, she told us to imagine a hundred wooden sticks together, and now, it was impossible to break.

In the same way, when one of us falls, another can help us up. But if a Christian is isolated, then defeat will be very easy and painful.

I was a fool when I was a kid and I fell into a cult online.

At that time, I struggled with making friends, and I didn’t have anyone to guide me in the faith.

I didn’t know that all my beliefs were wrong, as taught to me by the cult, and it plunged me into a decade of pain.

If I had the company of godly friends, I wouldn’t have been in that trouble.

Do not underestimate the power of a godly friend.

Mark 2:4 “Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.”

Do you see from the verse above the power of faithful friends? It can bring you incredible healing!

So if you are facing a difficulty and can’t seem to get out of it, turn to a godly friend, and God might put His words of counsel in their mouths to speak to you.

4. Your desires

I am sure every Christian has dealt with this question before: what is my calling/purpose?

It is true that God has a very specific plan for each and every one of His children.

And I see so many Christians saying that they hate their jobs, and they haven’t been happy in a long time, despite having Christ.

I believe that this is often a sign that their jobs are not the calling that God has for them, which is why they lack the fulfilment, because God can surely bring fulfilment to all His children in their work.

From my experience, there are many ways God communicates His will for our lives.

And one of those ways is through placing desires in our heart.

Have you ever had a desire that is not like other desires you have, ones that come and go?

This desire never leaves you. It always abides.

And it slowly grows stronger and stronger.

You can’t put it down no matter what.

Friend, that desire might’ve been put there by God so that He can fulfil His purpose in your life.

And He will not put a desire in your heart without planning to one day turn it into a reality.

That said, I would like to remind you that there are evil desires in your heart along with holy ones. Not every desire you have comes from God.

One way to determine if it really comes from God is to see if it aligns with Scripture. God will never tell you to do something that contradicts Scripture.

5. A sense of peace

John 16:13  But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”

In this era, God has given us the Holy Spirit to indwell us.

God Himself resides in our hearts, and He is our guide.

Have you ever committed a sin, and immediately felt ashamed?

That was the Holy Spirit working in you to convict you.

And the reason why you even came to Christ in the first place was because the Holy Spirit moved you to accept Jesus.

And every Sunday, it is also the Holy Spirit that gives you the motivation to show up for church.

God’s Spirit is alive and active in us, working to guide us through every aspect of our lives.

So whenever you need to make an important decision, look within.

Do you have peace about a certain decision?

God speaks to us through this inner peace we have, and helps us make the right decisions for our lives.

For example, when I was foolishly casting dice to determine His will, I thought I had come across such a huge quick fix/formula.

And whenever I saw my friends struggling with determining God’s will for their lives, I wanted to share this so badly.

But for some reason, I couldn’t. Something in me just told me this wasn’t right. I couldn’t do it.

I didn’t have the energy to tell them this formula I had, and in hindsight I think that was the Holy Spirit preventing me from hurting others.

So in the same way, the Holy Spirit works in all of us to help us live out God’s will in our lives.

With this blog post, I genuinely pray and hope that you find some answers for the difficulty you are in right now.

Now, let’s recap!
