Hebrews 10:26:31: If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge, I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
If this passage teaches that wilful sin results in you losing your salvation, it also teaches that salvation can be lost over one wilful sin. How can that be? Because it will be in direct contradiction with this verse:
Romans 7:15-17: I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.
Paul himself, a great saint, says that he still commits sin. Does that then mean that he is exiled from God? I submit to you that every sin you commit after you are saved is wilful. Jesus also died for the sins you committed after you accepted him as your saviour. Hebrews 10:26-31 is not a warning to believers, or believers who have backslidden but to non-believers.
The author is speaking to non-believers. If they have heard of the preaching that Jesus died for their sins, but they do not go on to have a saving knowledge of that, and do not come to true faith, then they can only expect judgement. This verse is for those who have rejected Jesus’s sacrifice for their sins. If they do that, there is no other sacrifice. If you are a believer who has already accepted His sacrifice, then your sins are paid for, and you have no worry of losing your salvation.
You are eternally safe in Christ. You cannot lose your place in Heaven.
