(5/9) Hope for the Depressed Christian

·

You may think now, “if I’m not in this pain because of any sin, then why am I suffering?”

That is a common misconception. A lot of people think that just because God allowed something to happen, it also means that He willed for it to happen. That’s not true. Yes, you’re in this pain because He allowed it to happen. But it does not mean He wishes for you to be in this pain. The truth is that He has a purpose for this pain you are in.

If you’ve read the introduction to this series, you know that I spent 10 years in a cult teaching salvation through good works before He led me back to the teaching of salvation by grace through faith alone. I believe that decade of being in the cult is what caused me to have this mental illness, among other factors. While I was deep in my suffering, I brought many accusations against Him. I thought He had forsaken me, and I didn’t understand why He allowed this to happen. Now, years later, I look back and I see why He allowed the pain. He allowed this pain so that I could share my story with you, and give you hope. Now, I thank Him for giving me all the pain I suffered, because I know I can use it to serve Him. I realised that sometimes, for God to build things in your life, He has to first tear down what doesn’t belong.

So, He also has a purpose for your pain. It’s not necessarily the same reason as why He allowed my pain. Only God knows why He allowed this pain to happen to you. Your place is to trust Him, and believe that He will carry His purpose out in you.

Also, many people assume that because God allows some suffering, it also means that He was the one who gave it. The truth is that it was the devil who took away all those good things from you. He was the one who gave you this illness. Just like he was the one who took away everything Job had. Do you know what happened to Job at the end of his life after God had tested him?

Job 42:12 (New International Version): The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys.

When the Lord allows the devil to take something away from you, He does not allow it without intending to restore it many times over to you. In the bible, when He restores, it always exceeds the glory before.

Trust that the Lord will deliver you from this pain, and restore to you many times over the happiness you had before!
